World Conference on Science Literacy is an international conference initiated by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) to promote public science literacy across the world. The conference attracted representatives from a variety of international organizations, governmental agencies, science communication organizations or institutions, universities and research institutions, as well as a host of celebrities from science, education and business communities
The First World Conference on Science Literacy was held in Beijing on September 17th-19th, 2018. President Xi Jinping and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent congratulatory letters to the conference. Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, attended the conference and delivered a speech. Representatives from 23 international organizations and 58 national science institutions from 38 countries participated in the conference. As a significant outcome of the conference, “Beijing Declaration for Promoting Public Science Literacy Across the World” was unveiled, calling for close international exchange and cooperation, the establishment of an effective mechanism for collaboration, and the promotion of public scientific literacy. Themed “Science Literacy for a Shared and Better Future”, the conference aimed to build an international exchange platform and a global cooperation mechanism to push ahead the joint consultation, joint construction and sharing in promoting public science literacy, so as to get support from governments and mobilize scientists, educators, media, enterprises and other public forces to jointly fill in the gap in science literacy between countries, lead the universal improvement in public science literacy, fully release the positive energy of scientific and technological progress, enhance human well-being and build a better future.
2019 World Conference on Science Literacy was held in Beijing from October 16th to 17th, 2019. The Theme of the conference was “Science Literacy for Sustainable Development”, which aimed to realize the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promote positive interactions between society and science and technology, deepen mutual learning and resource sharing in the field of science education, communication and popularization in countries across the world, jointly improve public science literacy and boost the sustainable development of human society.
